Smart Home Security Research & Interactive Report

An interactive cybersecurity research publication examining smart home IoT attack surfaces, protocol weaknesses, real-world botnet propagation, and practical defensive configurations.

Problem statement

The consumer IoT ecosystem suffers from systemic security failures: unauthenticated management interfaces, hardcoded credentials, fragmented firmware updates, and vulnerable cloud bridge protocols. Traditional PDF research reports fail to communicate dynamic exploit chains interactively.

Motivation and intended users

To conduct a structured analysis of smart home attack surfaces, synthesize notable CVEs and Mirai-derivative attack vectors, and publish findings as an accessible, interactive digital research report.

Smart Home Security: Threat Vectors, Protocol Flaws, & Hardening Strategies

Research Context & Objectives

Connected smart devices—from IP cameras and smart thermostats to robotic vacuums—have proliferated into private residences without commensurate security controls. This research report investigates why IoT devices remain prime targets for automated botnet recruitment and network pivot attacks.

The Four Layers of IoT Attack Surface

  1. Device Hardware & Firmware: Unprotected UART/JTAG debugging headers, unencrypted SPI flash memory dumps, outdated Linux kernels, hardcoded vendor credentials.
  2. Local RF & Network Protocols: UPnP automated port forwarding exposing internal devices, unencrypted MQTT brokers, Zigbee key negotiation vulnerabilities.
  3. Cloud Infrastructure: Broken object-level authorization (BOLA) in vendor mobile APIs allowing unauthorized device control.
  4. Mobile Companion Application: Insecure local data storage, hardcoded API secret keys, excessive permissions.

Mirai Botnet Analysis

The 2016 Mirai botnet demonstrated how easily simple automated scanning can compromise hundreds of thousands of devices. Mirai’s scanner cycled through a hardcoded dictionary of 62 default credentials over Telnet ports 23 and 2323. Once authenticated, a minimal shell script downloaded the architecture-specific binary (ARM, MIPS, x86) and terminated competing malware processes.

Practical Defensive Recommendations

  • VLAN Segmentation: Place all IoT hardware on an isolated VLAN with no access to administrative interfaces or primary computing devices.
  • Disable UPnP: Disable Universal Plug and Play on the edge gateway to prevent rogue port forwarding.
  • Egress Filtering: Block outbound Telnet, SSH, and arbitrary DNS traffic originating from IoT network segments.
Key features and decisions
  • ›Interactive IoT Attack Surface Map detailing Device, Gateway, Cloud, and Mobile interfaces.
  • ›Filterable CVE Vulnerability Matrix linking documented vulnerabilities to affected protocols.
  • ›Comprehensive Mirai Botnet Case Study dissecting Telnet brute-force propagation and DDoS mechanics.
  • ›Interactive risk assessment cards scoring protocol weaknesses (Zigbee, Z-Wave, MQTT, UPnP).
  • ›Actionable hardening checklist for network segmentation and home gateway firewall configuration.
Challenges and limitations
  • !CVE database represents a curated educational subset rather than a live synchronized NVD feed.
  • !Focus is placed on consumer smart-home equipment rather than industrial SCADA/ICS hardware.
  • !Live demonstration is hosted via GitHub Pages as an interactive web publication.
